Residents of Gyumri, Armenia. Late 19th century

Streets of Gyumri (Alexandropol, part of the Russian Empire), late 19th century.
The illustration depicts the historic buildings of the old town, as well as its residents of various classes and professions. A significant portion of the population consisted of immigrants from western Armenia, primarily Erzurum (Karin). This is reflected in the illustration's traditional women's dress of the region.
Furthermore, the famous Gyumri phaeton (a light, horse-drawn urban carriage with a convertible top) is featured in the center of the composition.
